These three female figures were found in the Tomb of Niankhpepy 'the Black' in the rich archeological site of Meir . Discovered by the Egyptian Antiquities Service in 1894 , the model was identified to date back to the Sixth Dynasty , during the reign of King Pepy I (2289-2255 BC) . A great corpus of wooden models and miniature objects and statuettes were found in ancient Egyptian tombs , from which we derived valuable information on how they had used to live and what activities preoccupied them most .

Posing on a rectangular wooden base , these wooden figurines wear long white garments of the same style . Over their heads , they carry oval containers with their right hand . Only the one at the front carries the container with the left hand , indicating that she is their leader . Noticeably , the height of the women decreases from the leader to the woman at the back . There was a purpose behind this . It is either to suggest different shots of one walking woman , or to show a line of women approaching from afar .
