As a cheaper substitute of papyrus , ancient Egyptians used small fragments of clay or limestone , called ostraka , to write brief notes and outline plans and other sketches . Unearthed in the remains of the Tomb of Ramesses IX , this ostrakon has the outline of the King's royal tomb on its surface . The layout shows the tomb consists of a stairway , a central ramp , three corridors , and three chambers . In the first chamber , purification ceremonies were carried out over the mummy . The following chamber contains four pillars and a chariot . The final one contained the Pharaoh's sarcophagus and mummy . It is suggested that the tomb's actual plans were elaborately sketched on papyrus
