Ptolemy I
encouraged the immigration of the
Greeks
and Macedonians in large numbers to come and settle in
Egypt
. He distributed the agricultural lands on them ordering them to cultivate these lands during peace and war and as a result large areas of land were reclaimed .
Ptolemy I encouraged the Greek engineers to come to Egypt to improve the irrigation system in Egypt by digging new canals . As a result , the agricultural land increased and the economic of Egypt flourished . He introduced the monetary system in Egypt and applied the barter system . Then , he introduced the Drachma (the currency of the Greeks that was made of silver and bronze) . He encouraged the Greek bankers to settle in Egypt .
