The Hanging Church locates in the District of Misr El Qadima in the Coptic Compound. It is one of the most famous and the oldest churches in Cairo. It takes its name from the fact that it is built on the top of the southern tower of Babylon fortress.The church dates back to the 7th century and like the whole district it suffered from the fires that burnt the Olsd Fustat and was restored several times. During centuries the church was the seat of the Patriarch of Alexandria.
The church consist of a staircase of 29 steps, a nave, a narthex and three sanctuaries. Some beautiful artifacts of the church such as the iconostasis and the screens in the sanctuary of Saint Mark date from the 15th and 13th centuries. It is also distinguished by its star pattern is that reveals the uniformity of the Egyptian decorative style.
