Helwan



Helwan is one of the governorates of Egypt that was regarded as a part of Cairo Governorate till 2008. Nowadays it is a separate governorate bordered with Cairo from the northern, El Sharqeya, and El Qalyubiya Governorates, the Nile River from the west, and Suez Governorate from the east. Helwan area witnessed an age of prosperity during the Mamluk rule of Egypt since it was regarded as the Capital of Mamluk Egypt and a luxuriously decorated palaces and mosques were established there. By the passage of time, the importance of the city decreased and most of the monuments in it were devastated till the reign of Khedive Ismail.
