Enhancing cycling experiences are available in and around Cairo and other locations in Egypt. Surprisingly enough, Cairo and the immediate areas around Cairo offer a diverse range of enjoyable and unique cycling experiences. Yet, such a sport is preferably practiced in some cities where bicycle lanes are available. In Aswan, Luxor, Sharm El Sheikh and Hurgada, cycling is safer.
You can cycle on the West bank and then cross the Nile on small boats to meet up with other boats at Aswan, Egypt’s southern-most city on the east bank of the Nile. The route is flat with the odd incline but at Aswan you can cycle through the town to the low dam & then up to the high dam, a wonderful climb which you will thoroughly enjoy. The world famous dam provides irrigation and electricity for the whole of Egypt. Cycling along the high dam you will be able to gaze across Lake Nassar, the huge reservoir created when it was built. The high dam created a 30% increase in the cultivable land in Egypt, and raised the water table as far away as Algeria. Egypt is noted for its bird life and you will see a variety of birds including kingfishers and egrets. Most of the route was close to the Nile, apart from when we went into the desert.
