Temple of Herishef (Hercules)

Near the town of El Bawiti, in El Bahariya Oasis, stood the Temple of Herishef (now completely ruined) which dates back to the Roman Period. The temple was dedicated to Hercules (the Egyptian Herishef). Some archeologists suggest that it was erected under the reign of Emperor Octavian Augustus, during the first century BC. Within the temple’s layout, was found a sanctuary with three chapels. Found at the rich archeological site of the remains of the temple were a great deal of statuettes and stelae modeled on the forms of different Egyptian and Roman gods and goddesses. Such finds were found carved with demotic, hieratic, and Greek inscriptions.
