Discovered by Ahmed Fakhry, a famous Egyptian archeologist, in 1972, the Tombs of El-Mezauaka (Muzawaka) ─ which means 'The Ornamented' in English─ were so named because of their multi-colored reliefs. They date back to the Roman Period. They mainly refer to the nicely decorated tombs of Petosiris and Sadosiris. The elder tomb belongs to Pawi Ozir from the 1st century. The tomb of Ozir's assistant has numerous interesting astrological scenes. Unfortunately, the tombs are closed for visitors since experts found out that fresh air and the humid breath from visitors badly affect its wall paintings and relief.
