Tourism in Deir Abu Matta

The remains of the mud-brick Monastery of Abu Matta lie 2.1 miles northwest of Rashda (a village in Dakhla Oasis). It dates back to the fifth century AD. It is also referred to as Deir al-Saba Banat (‘Monastery of the Seven Virgins’). Excavations at the site revealed remains of 9 rooms surrendered by walls (still standing and some measured three stories in height). Earthenware coffins dating back to the Coptic Period were also found. Around the area, archeologists found an ancient cemetery as well as some artifacts identified with the art of the seventh century.
