Zagazig is the capital of
El Sharqiya
Governorate located about 80 km to the east of Cairo . The city is built on Bahr El Muizz Canal (the ancient channel of the Nile) that is a branch of
Ismailiya
Canal to be a residence for the workers in the barrages of the eastern branch of the Nile . The main economic resources of the city are driven from agriculture , commerce , textile industry , and the administrative services .
Additionally , within the city's limits stands Zagazig University , one of the tremendously great universities in
Egypt
. It was mainly erected to promote the educational and regional development of the governorate . It comprises a large number of branches in most of the specialties and provided with a highly qualified teaching staff . Zagazig is the birthplace of many famous figures in Egypt including Abd El Halim Hafez , Ahmed Zaky and many others .
