The Selection of the Tomb Site
The selection of a site for a royal tomb was a major decision , probably taken by priests and senior workmen from Dier al-Madina . Once chosen , ceremonies were performed to sanctify the site and small pits were dug and filled with miniature tools and religious symbols . These "foundation deposits" have been found associated with nine tombs in the valley , but it is likely that future excavations will reveal that most if not all royal tombs had them .
