The Foreign Policy of Nasser

In 1958 , Egypt and Syria joined to form one united country and became the United Arab Republic (UAR) . Syria announced its secession in 1961 , however , Egypt continued to be known as the UAR until 1971 . In September 1961 , Nasser cooperated with India and Yugoslavia in founding the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) of developing countries and was considered its leading force until his death in 1970 . Egypt played a great role in supporting the Arab Countries in gaining their independence and getting rid of the tyrannical rule . Egypt entered the Yemeni Civil War (1962-1970) and stood beside the guerrillas against the monarchy . Nasser also supported the formation of the Palestine Liberation Organization .
