Siwa is an oasis in
Matrouh Governorate
in the
Western Desert
, in the north-west of
Egypt
. The majority of the inhabitants are Berbers and its main economic resources are driven from tourism and agricultural crops , especially olive and dates .
The oasis' popularity largely depends on having on its land the Temple of the Oracle of god Amoun , where
Alexander the Great
was coroneted .
Spread in different corners of the oasis are prehistoric remains of nearly one million years BC , as well as other ruins from the Ptolemaic and Roman Periods . But the earliest remains that connect the Oasis to Egypt date back to the Twenty-sixth Dynasty . Additionally , the city is blessed with a number of other attractions like the fortress and the Roman Necropolis at Gabal El-Mawta .
