El Sharqiya is a governorate located in the north-east of
Egypt
with
El Qalyoubiya
Governorate to its south ,
Ismailiya
to its east , El Daqahlia to its west and El Manazala Lake to its north . It covers about 4911km² and comprises of a large number of administrative centers , cities and towns . It is linked with neighboring governorates including Port Said , Gharbia and
Cairo
with railroad that facilitate commercial transactions among them .
Throughout history , El Sharqiya was regarded as the eastern gate of Egypt from which invaders were usually able to enter the country . It was annexed to
El Dakahlia
Governorate and its capital was Belbays City . During the
Fatimid
Period in 1315 El Dakahlia was regarded as a separate governorate . In the 19th century the capital of El Sharqeya was transferred from Belbays to El
Zaqaziq
City .
Nowadays , it encompasses a wide range of agricultural lands and the most important agricultural crops in it are wheat , cotton , soybeans and rice . The national day of the governorate is 9 September and its main economic resources of the governorate are driven from agriculture ,
raising poultry , logistic services and food industries . The governorate is supplied with most of the essential services of water supply , sanitation , health care services . On its land stands El Zaqaziq University , one of the major universities in Egypt that has numerous branches and a highly qualified teaching staff . Additionally , Arab tribes of El Sharqiya Governorate are famous for raising best races of camels and horses and training them for participating in national races .
