Giza City is the capital of Giza Governorate on the western bank of the Nile and few kilometers away from Cairo. Until the beginning of the 19th century, the major part of the city was mainly a cultivated area. In 1880, Khedive Ismael made the Giza Avenue and Pyramid Avenue so that the European Rulers who visited Egypt in 1869, during the inauguration of the Suez Canal, could visit the Pyramids. Around these avenues, a number of villas, palaces and parks were built. Since 1980, the city experienced a great growth in its population and now it is one of the most populated cities in the world.
