Giza
City is the capital of
Giza Governorate
on the western bank of the Nile and few kilometers away from
Cairo
. Until the beginning of the 19th century , the major part of the city was mainly a cultivated area . In 1880 , Khedive Ismael made the Giza Avenue and Pyramid Avenue so that the European Rulers who visited
Egypt
in 1869 , during the inauguration of the
Suez
Canal , could visit the Pyramids . Around these avenues , a number of villas , palaces and parks were built . Since 1980 , the city experienced a great growth in its population and now it is one of the most populated cities in the world .
Giza is one of the most visited destinations in Egypt since it encloses the major tourist attraction in Egypt including
Giza Plateau
, Giza Pyramids and many other Pharaonic Necropolises .
