This funerary mask dates back to the Middle Kingdom (1994-1650 BC) . Generally masks were placed on mummies to identify the dead body and to maintain immortality . Made from wood lined with stucco , the face of this middle aged deceased's exposes very impressive expressions . Framing his face is a long black triple wig falling down his shoulders . With ears partly sticking out , the face has wide eyes and a faint smile on the man's lips . Kohl (eye black) highlights the beauty of the eyes and is likewise applied on the eyebrows . He also has both a beard and moustache . Hanging down from his neck is a broad necklace with multi-colored stripes decorated with red and black beads .
