As much as Egypt's administrative machinery is concerned , it was one of the greatest Islamic provinces governed by a viceroy appointed by the Caliph .
As for its boundaries ,
Egypt
comprised Upper and Lower Egypt at the beginning of the Arab conquest . Later , Nubia , Sinai and Northern Hijaz were ceded and in 765 Barca was annexed .
The governor was appointed over all the above mentioned territories during the reign of the Orthodox and Ommeyade Caliphs , while he was appointed over a part of it in the time of the Abbassids .
