1967 War

Nasser's foreign and military policies were central in provoking the Six Day War in 1967 . After the defeat of Egypt , Syria and Jordan by the Israeli forces , Israel occupied the Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip from Egypt , Golan Heights from Syria , and West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan . After the war , Nasser decided to resign but the love and appreciation of his people towards him made him continue ruling . In fact , he was such an autocratic ruler; however , his people and all Arabs loved and appreciated him for his attempts to improve and develop his country , for his heroic actions with the Arab countries and his opposition to Britain , Israel , and any foreign country trying to impose its policy over the Arabs . In 1970 , Nasser died of a heart attack and was succeeded by president Anwar al-Saddat .
