The
Suez Canal
is the major waterway in the world linking between the
Red Sea
and the Mediterranean Sea . It supports about 10% of the international shipping traffic and plays a great role in transporting goods through out Europe and Asia without the circumnavigation of Africa . The canal locates westward Sinai Peninsula and stretches for about 190km , its width reaches about 180ft and its depth about 40ft . It also cuts through three important lakes in Egypt: El Manzala Lake , El Temsah Lake , and the Bitter Lake .
In spite of the international treaties that control over the process of managing the canal , it has been closed twice throughout history . The first time was during the
Suez
Canal Crises , the tripartite attack on Egypt , and the second during 1976 war .
The Sumed Pipeline in the Suez Canal is another factor for doubling the Importance of the canal due to its role in exporting Oil to Europe . This pipeline has the capacity to transmit about 2 . 5 million bbl/d from El Ain El Sukhna terminal at the Gulf of Suez to Sidi Kerir at the Mediterranean Sea .
